Dr. Ivan E. Correa, M.D., C.M.D., a distinguished and highly respected healthcare leader, has been named medical director of University Health Services (UHS). Previously the chief of staff at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Central Western Massachusetts Health Care System, Dr. Correa officially began his new role this week.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Ivan E. Correa to UHS where his expertise, leadership, and commitment to patient-centered care will undoubtedly elevate our healthcare services, ensuring the continued well-being of our university community,” UHS Executive Director Andrew McMahon says. “Dr. Correa brings forth an exceptional background and an extensive portfolio of experiences that align seamlessly with our commitment to delivering exemplary healthcare to our community.”

Board-certified in family medicine and geriatric medicine, Dr. Correa’s multidimensional expertise underscores his commitment to comprehensive patient care. He previously served as chief of staff at the Atlanta VA and Sierra Nevada VA Health Care Systems, where he was in the top clinical leadership role overseeing vast integrated healthcare systems focused on research, teaching, ambulatory care, surgical units and significant behavioral health operations.

“Dr. Correa’s academic appointments as a clinical assistant professor in geriatric, hospice and palliative medicine at Emory University, the University of Nevada Reno School of Medicine and the University of New Mexico School of Medicine highlight his commitment to both clinical practice and academic advancement in healthcare,” McMahon says. “His leadership style is characterized by a profound emphasis on relationship-building, attentive listening, and collaborative approaches.”

Dr. Correa’s career began as a research microbiologist, contributing significantly to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Defense, before embarking on his medical career. His research interests encompass a profound dedication to understanding caregiver burden in dementia and a fervent passion for managing symptoms in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), end-of-life care and preventing polypharmacy in the elderly.

Dr. Correa assumes the role previously held by Dr. George Corey, who served as both UHS medical director and executive director from August 2013 until McMahon’s appointment in fall 2022. Dr. Corey, who first came to UMass in 2010, will remain on staff at UHS as a family medicine practitioner.

“I want to thank Dr. Corey for his years of dedicated service to the UMass community, his leadership through the monumental challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and his deep commitment to the health and wellbeing of UMass students, faculty and staff,” McMahon says. “We are fortunate that Dr. Corey is staying on in the role of family medicine physician here at UHS, where he will continue to draw on his experience and wisdom while caring for patients in our Walk-In Clinic.”
