The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will host an interdisciplinary panel and hands-on workshop on the integrated use of zines in teaching and student coursework, Wednesday, April 24, from 1:30-3 p.m. in Bartlett Hall, CTL Conference Room 312.

Zines, or fanzines – self-published, small-circulation publications – have long been used to process and share information on a wide variety of cultural, political and personal topics. In higher education, instructors from a range of disciplines have used zines as assignments to help students personalize learning, feel more engaged with course concepts, gain a deeper understanding of multi-genre writing, connect with diverse audiences and find a voice outside of traditional power structures.

Facilitated by Brian Baldi, CTL assistant director and senior lecturer, the hands-on workshop will give participants an opportunity to learn from faculty who have successfully integrated zines into their courses and teaching, take notes in their very own zine and review examples of student work.

Panelists include Kevin A. Young, associate professor of history; Diana Sierra Becerra, assistant professor of history; Kelsey Whipple, assistant professor of journalism; and Jeremy Smith, Ellsberg archivist of the Robert S. Cox Special Collections and University Archives Research Center. The presenters will send workshop materials including slides, handouts and links to registered participants after the workshop, and coffee, tea and snacks will be provided.
