UMass Amherst Information Technology (UMass IT) has completed the installation of new network configurations across campus, completing a three-year initiative to modernize and improve wireless connections across campus.

First installed in select locations in 2022, the upgraded network is designed to support the modern-day technology needs of faculty, staff and students working and living on campus. The network provides a secure networking infrastructure, increased speed and broader connectivity inside and outside of campus buildings and dormitories. Alongside supporting the campus community, the network’s heightened capabilities have also allowed for a new system for campus guests to seamlessly register and connect to campus networks.

“Students on campus bring an average of 8-12 wireless devices with them, for everything from streaming to accessing their coursework,” says UMass Network Engineer Jessa Westclark. “The new interface allows us to see these analytics and make adjustments as needed to support our campus community.”

While providing a vastly improved networking experience, the new network will also make significant strides towards the university’s goal of carbon neutrality. Alongside monitoring electric vehicle charging stations throughout campus, the new network will also be used to measure specific output levels on campus in line with campus sustainability goals.

“We’re using the network to monitor electricity, water and steam all over campus,” notes Benjamin Brown, assistant director of networking. “All our solar arrays are also connected to the new network, which allows us to transmit real-time battery data to make informed decisions.”

Speed and reliability have both increased substantially with the new network, resulting in decreased incidents with on-campus internet connections by nearly 100%. The new infrastructure also enables quick installation and replacement access points, providing faster response times when issues arise.
