Angela B. Abraham, O.D., Joins UHS as Director of Eye Care Services

Angela B. Abraham, O.D., has joined University Health Services (UHS) as director of eye care services, one of UHS’s busiest departments. Eye Care Services provides vision care to students, faculty and staff of the Five Colleges.

Board certified by the Massachusetts Board of Optometry and South Carolina Board of Optometry, Abraham comes to UHS from Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where she served as director of eye care services. Concurrently, she held the positions of diversity and inclusion liaison and clinical assistant professor at the New England College of Optometry in Boston. She was awarded the Nick Littlefield Health Policy Fellowship for 2017-18 by the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation in Boston. Previous roles include director of eye care services and director of residency in community health optometry, The Dimock Center, Roxbury, Massachusetts; associate clinical professor and staff optometrist at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology, Columbia, South Carolina; and chief of optometry at Family Health Centers, Inc., Orangeburg, South Carolina. 

Abraham is a member of the American Optometric Association, National Optometric Association, Massachusetts Society of Optometrists, National Association of Community Health Centers, and the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers. Areas of interest include social justice in health care, public health strategies and outcomes as related to eye and vision impairment and loss, reducing racial disparities in vision health care and strategies to improve cultural competence in the practice of optometry. She will serve as UHS’s Diversity Patient Advocate for patients with concerns about ethnic or racial discrimination. Abraham earned her bachelor’s degree in biology at Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts, her doctorate of optometry at the University of Missouri-St. Louis School of Optometry, St. Louis, Missouri; and completed her fellowship in ocular disease at the O’Donnell Eye Institute, St. Louis, Missouri.
