On Wednesday, September 18 in the Gunness Student Center, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) hosted the inaugural event in its Women’s Dinner Series, which aims to build a community of support for undergraduate and graduate women in ECE.
The inaugural event focused on the topic of “Building Your Community” and welcomed panelists Karen Skolfield, Writer-in-Residence of the Engineering Career Center, Christina Mata, Associate Director of Graduate Career Programs, and Paula Rees, Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
There were 42 undergraduate and graduate students in attendance. One of the students was Elizabeth Peter, a junior Computer Engineering major, who reflected: “I met this PhD student among other women I met at the dinner, and we really connected because of our experiences as international students. We ended up studying together after the event, and then went to the Amherst Block Party later that night. It was such a memorable experience and one that I never expected to get out of the ECE dinner series.”
The next event is Tuesday, November 19, from 5-7 pm. The topic is “The Art of Introducing Yourself” and will feature a presentation by Shana Passonno, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School, Office of Professional Development.
This series is funded by the OEI Campus Climate Improvement Grant and by the College of Engineering's Career Development and Experiential Learning Center. The organizers are Mata, Passonno, Emily Krems (ECE Academic Advisor), Yasra Chandio (ECE PhD student), and Sanskruti Khedkar (ECE undergraduate student and peer advisor).
