Riccio College of Engineering Ranked #55 Best Graduate Engineering Program Nationally

The UMass Amherst Riccio College of Engineering has been ranked No. 55 overall among the 2026/2027 Best Graduate Schools for Engineering by U.S. News & World Report, and No. 30 among public graduate engineering programs. The college continues to be the No. 1 public engineering program in New England.

National graduate rankings published for specific subject areas within the Riccio College of Engineering include chemical engineering at No. 41 (public No. 22); industrial at No. 35 (public No. 24); computer at No. 40 (public No. 23); materials at No. 68 (public No. 36); environmental at No. 38 (public No. 21); civil at No. 48 (public No. 31); electrical at No. 52 (public No. 28); mechanical at No. 60 (public No. 34); and biomedical at No. 64 (public No. 34). 

Notably rising programs this year include biomedical, which rose by 10 spots in the overall rankings, environmental, which rose by 9 spots, and industrial, which rose by 8. 

The published rankings are based on reputational surveys of deans and industry leaders, as well as statistical indicators that assess the strength and quality of a school’s research, students, and faculty, including total number of PhDs granted, research expenditures, average GRE score, percentage of faculty members in the National Academy of Engineering, and more.
