College of Engineering Ranked #49 Best Graduate Engineering Program Nationally

The UMass Amherst College of Engineering has been ranked No. 49 overall among the 2025/2026 Best Graduate Schools for Engineering by U.S. News & World Report, and No. 27 among public graduate engineering programs.
The college has been steadily rising in the rankings over the past several years, up from No. 65 in the 2019 rankings.
Notably, the College of Engineering is now ranked in the top 30 for both graduate and undergraduate public engineering programs. In addition, the college continues to be the No. 1 public engineering program in New England at both the graduate and undergraduate level.
National graduate rankings published for specific subject areas within the College of Engineering include chemical engineering at No. 44; industrial at No. 43; computer at No. 38; materials at No. 56; environmental at No. 47; civil at No. 49; electrical at No. 45; mechanical at No. 60; and biomedical at No. 74.
The published rankings are based on reputational surveys of deans and industry leaders, as well as statistical indicators that assess the strength and quality of a school’s research, students, and faculty, including total number of PhDs granted, research expenditures, average GRE score, percentage of faculty members in the National Academy of Engineering, and more.
