“My studies as a Chemical Engineer at UMass Amherst allowed me to have the tools necessary to learn on the job and excel in the lab work related to venous malformations I did during my internship at Boston Children’s Hospital. The work I did with my mentor helped to further research on this issue and gave me valuable experience working in a lab.”

“I highly recommend UMass because it's a large and diverse school, offering ample opportunities for exploration. The expansive campus allows you to take classes across various departments and pursue minor degrees in addition to your major. In the Department of Chemical Engineering, there are abundant opportunities for undergraduates to engage in research.”

Taras Nagornyy '24

Chemical Engineering major Taras Nagornyy, was chosen as a UMass Amherst Rising Researcher for his work on minimizing the release of harmful gases from vehicles with diesel engines, such as trucks, trains, ships, and military vehicles.

“My time at UMass has helped me grow as an individual and discover my strengths that I can use for the future. Studying Chemical Engineering has taught me valuable problem solving skills and it has brought me closer to my peers though clubs such as the Society of Women Engineers. I am excited to see where my career takes me and to keep these connections I have made for a lifetime!”

Elana Peisner '23

During her time at UMass, Elana conducted research in the Schiffman lab—which focuses on using green engineering to design materials that improve human health and the environment—and served as a conference coordinator for the Society of Women Engineers. She is now a PhD student at Northeastern.

Beyond the Classroom

The ChemE Car team designs and constructs an electro-chemically powered model car and then participates in the national American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) competition. This is just one of the many exciting initiatives open to Chemical Engineering majors.
