MSEM Curriculum

Our innovative and comprehensive curriculum is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel at the intersection of engineering, data analytics, and management. With a total requirement of 10 courses (30crs), you'll have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of courses offered by both the School of Management and the College of Engineering. Note that you can get two certificates along the way as you complete your 30crs, one in Engineering Project Management and Leadership and one in Decision Analytics.

Foundation Courses (Required)

You'll begin your journey with three foundational courses that lay the groundwork for your MSEM experience:

  • Project Budgeting and Finance for Engineers
  • Technical Project Management
  • Predictive Analytics and Statistical Learning

Management Core (Choose two courses)

Our management core courses offer a deep dive into essential managerial topics:

  • Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship: Cultivate leadership skills tailored for the engineering environment. Learn how to inspire teams, foster innovation, and drive growth within your organization.
  • Engineering Law & Ethics OR Business Law: Understand the legal aspects of engineering management, including contracts, intellectual property, and regulatory compliance. Navigate legal challenges and ethical dilemmas confidently.
  • Negotiations: Master the art of negotiation. Enhance your ability to create win-win scenarios and effectively manage conflicts in engineering contexts.
  • Product Management: Learn the principles of effective product management, from concept to market. Gain insights into product development, marketing strategies, and customer-centric approaches.
  • Strategy-Driven Engineering Innovation: Develop a strategic mindset for engineering innovation. Learn to align technical advancements with business objectives to drive sustainable growth.

Technical/Analytics Core (Choose three courses)

The technical/analytics core offers a diverse set of courses to deepen your technical expertise:

  • Descriptive Analytics: Explore the fundamentals of data analysis. Learn to summarize and visualize data to gain valuable insights.
  • Prescriptive Analytics: Discover optimization techniques to make data-driven decisions. Solve complex engineering problems through mathematical modeling and optimization.
  • Business Intelligence and Analytics: Harness the power of business intelligence tools and techniques to transform data into actionable insights.
  • Human Factors Design: Understand the human-centered design principles that impact product usability, safety, and user satisfaction.
  • Principles of Systems Engineering: Master systems thinking and the integration of complex engineering systems.
  • Economic Decision-Making: Learn to evaluate engineering projects from an economic perspective. Analyze costs, benefits, and risks to make sound investment decisions.
  • Multi-criteria Decision Making: Explore decision-making strategies when faced with multiple conflicting criteria. Make well-informed decisions that balance various factors.
  • Network Optimization: Dive into optimization techniques applied to network systems, an essential skill in today's interconnected world.
  • Advanced Production Planning: Gain expertise in production planning and optimization, essential for efficient manufacturing operations.
  • Supply Chain Logistics: Learn the intricacies of supply chain management, from procurement to distribution, and optimize the flow of goods and services.

Certifications

As part of the MSEM program, you'll have the opportunity to earn valuable certifications:

  • PML Certification (Project Management and Leadership): Complete the courses in Project Budgeting and Finance for Engineers, Technical Project Management, and Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship to earn this prestigious certification, demonstrating your proficiency in project management and leadership skills.
  • DAN Certification (Decision Analytics): Earn the DAN certification by successfully completing the courses in Descriptive Analytics, Prescriptive Analytics, and Predictive Analytics and Statistical Learning, showcasing your expertise in data-driven decision-making and analytics.

Electives and Advanced Studies

As an MSEM student at UMass Amherst, you'll have the exciting opportunity to customize your education with a diverse array of elective courses, allowing you to specialize in areas that align with your interests and career goals. Our elective portfolio encompasses courses from both the management and technical cores, providing you with a well-rounded perspective that bridges the gap between engineering and management.

MSEM Electives Portfolio

  1. Management or Technical Core Courses: You can choose additional courses from the management or technical core options to further enhance your expertise in areas such as engineering leadership, analytics, business intelligence, and more.
  2. Independent Studies or Industry Capstone Experiences: Engage in independent studies, research projects, or industry-focused capstone experiences to apply your skills in real-world settings. Collaborate with faculty mentors and industry professionals to tackle challenging problems and gain hands-on experience.
