Shlomo Zilberstein, professor and associate dean of research and engagement in the College of Information and Computer Sciences, has been awarded the 2019 Distinguished Service Award by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), a nonprofit society devoted to advancing the scientific understanding of intelligent behavior and its embodiment in machines.

Zilberstein, who received the award during the 33rd AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence Jan. 27-Feb. 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii, was cited for his “sustained and conscientious service and leadership, both to AAAI as a councilor and conference committee chair, and to the broader AI community, as the president of ICAPS (International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling).”

His research in artificial intelligence focuses on reasoning techniques that allow intelligent systems to operate autonomously while coping with uncertainty and limited resources, as well as recognize their limitations and obtain human assistance. In collaboration with industry, he has applied his research to developing service robots and self-driving cars.
