Winter 2022-23 Session Experiences Record Enrollment

Enrollment for the six-week 2022-23 Winter Session rose to more than 6,100 students — an increase of 32% over the five-week Winter 2021-22 Session — making it the most popular intersession offering to date at UMass Amherst.

“I’m particularly encouraged by the increased number of on-campus students who were able to take advantage of this year’s winter session,” says Farshid Hajir, Senior Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education. “This underscores the importance of strategic initiatives such as UMass Flex which offer a greater variety of times and modalities in which students can access our courses.”

Students and faculty who were surveyed expressed a preference for a six-week session over shorter session lengths. The additional week allowed for more time to cover course material.

“The winter session provides a great opportunity for students to take a needed prerequisite course or to get ahead in coursework to prepare for an internship,” says College of Engineering Senior Associate Dean and professor of electrical and computer engineering Russell Tessier. “The students in my freshman engineering course offered during the winter session were eager to participate in live discussions after reviewing recorded materials.”

The 2022-23 winter session ran from December 21 through February 3.
