UMassSafe hosts 2019 Commercial Vehicle Safety Summit Nov. 19-20 in Northampton

AMHERST, Mass. – UMassSafe, a division of the UMass Transportation Center, is hosting the 2019 Commercial Vehicle Safety Summit, “Best Practices for Industry & Law Enforcement Partnerships,” on Nov. 19-20 at the Hotel Northampton, 36 King St., Northampton, MA.

The event brings together safety stakeholders from across the Northeast including those from state trucking and bus associations, law enforcement, state drivers licensing agencies, Universities and government. It features plenary sessions, workshops and demonstrations of innovative programming and technologies.

Keynote remarks will be given by Alan Hanson, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) chief counsel, and Robert Molloy, director of the Office of Highway Safety at the National Transportation Safety Board.

“We are looking forward to taking part in this discussion and continue building our partnerships with law enforcement and the commercial vehicle industry,” Hanson says. “ Safety is the top priority of the Department of Transportation and FMCSA, and by continuing to collaborate we can help advance our shared goal of reducing crashes and improving safety on the nation’s roadways.” 

Michael A. Knodler, director of the UMass Transportation Center, says, “At UMassSafe, we have long believed partnerships are the key to roadway safety. This summit is a direct call to action, through which various agencies, companies and organizations can come together to collaborate and develop new solutions to the problems roadway users face.”

The focus of this year’s summit is establishing partnerships between law enforcement institutions and leaders of the commercial vehicle industry in order improve roadway safety for all travelers. Over the course of two days, speakers will discuss the most prescient issues facing commercial vehicle safety today, including impacts of marijuana decriminalization, preparation for highly automated vehicles, addressing driver distraction, and much more. In addition, states will be sharing the crash prevention programming they’ve implemented in partnerships with their trucking associations as well as lessons learned and ways these programs can be replicated in other states.
