UMass Symphony Orchestra to Perform Works by Berlioz, Beethoven
On Wednesday, Oct. 30, the department of music and dance will present a performance by the UMass Amherst Symphony Orchestra, the university’s top orchestral ensemble. The concert will be conducted by Kristo Kondakçi, in place of orchestra director Morihiko Nakahara, who is on sabbatical.
Kondakçi is the music director of the Kendall Square Orchestra, which brings together musicians from science, technology and innovation companies. He is also the conductor and co–founder of Eureka Ensemble, a network of over 80 professional classical musicians that nurtures social change through music. This past year, Kondakçi made his Symphony Hall debut conducting the Kendall Square Orchestra with members of the Boston Symphony and Keith Lockhart on piano.
The Oct. 30 concert, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, will include Berlioz’s epic “Symphonie Fantastique” along with Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture.” In addition, the ensemble will perform Paul Creston’s “Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra” featuring saxophonist Christopher Leslie, one of last year’s Concerto Competition winners.
