Music and Dance to Host Inaugural Dance Science Symposium
On Tuesday, Feb. 26, the department of music and dance will present the inaugural Dance Science Symposium from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in Hasbrouck Hall, room 20. The free event is hosted by Tom Vacanti, director of the dance program, and organized by Aston K. McCullough, postdoctoral research associate at the School of Public Health & Health Sciences and adjunct assistant professor of applied physiology at Columbia University Teachers College.
The symposium is the first in a series of regional meetings that will bring together dancers and dance scientists to discuss critical and emerging research within the field of dance science and medicine. Grounded in the premise that science is not separate from art, the symposium will feature original research conducted by professional dancers who are simultaneously active in the field of dance science and medicine. The list of featured speakers at the event will include:
- Siobhan Lawless, M.S., School of Graduate Studies, SUNY Downstate Medical Center
- Cecilia Fontanesi, M.S., M.Phil., The Graduate Center, City University of New York
- Aston K. McCullough, Ph.D., M.S., M.A., School of Public Health & Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts Amherst; Teachers College, Columbia University
- Elizabeth Coker, Ed.D., Tisch School of the Arts, New York University
Each speaker’s presentation will address pertinent questions related to dance training and performance in research, as well as illustrate novel applications of dance-based practices or interventions in community contexts and/or clinical populations.
The symposium will culminate in a panel discussion on the current state of research in dance science and medicine, with space for musings and insights as they relate to the next steps and evolutions for research in dance.
