UMass Esports Team Heads to Collegiate Cup Semifinals

UMass’s esports Overwatch team will match up against defending champions, Northeastern A, in Boston Uprising’s Spring 2019 Collegiate Cup semifinals on Sunday, April 28 at 10 a.m. at the Back Bay Events Center.

Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first person video game connecting over 35 million players around the globe. It can be played on PC Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The professional team hosting the Collegiate Cup, Boston Uprising, is owned by the Kraft group and became the first professional Overwatch League (OWL) team in Boston in 2017. The OWL is an international 20 team professional esports league with Atlantic and Pacific divisions.

Also competing in the semifinals are Boston University and Emerson A. The two winning semifinal teams will meet in a championship match later that day. The winning team will earn a trip to California to see the Boston Uprising team compete during the 2019 season.

The UMass students competing include Cooper Lewis, Ryan Reed-Edwards, Long Lu, Daniel Mei, Barry Giglio and Quinn Urbonas. Their other teammates, who play as alternates, are Remberto Perlera-Vasquez, Cameron Ringdahl and Amirhossein Ghafari.

The live semifinal and championship matches are free and open to the public. Tickets need to be reserved ahead of time via Eventbrite. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and light concessions will be available. The event will also be streamed on Twitch beginning at 10 a.m.
