UMass Donahue Institute Looks Back and Plans Ahead as it Celebrates 50 Years of Public Service on May 3
The UMass Donahue Institute recognized 50 years of client-centered public service in an event at the University of Massachusetts Club at One Beacon Street on May 3, from 5-7:30 p.m. There was also an option to attend the event virtually via Zoom from 5:30-7 p.m.
Founded 50 years ago as the Institute for Governmental Services and later named after its late founder, Massachusetts State Senate President Maurice A. Donahue, the UMass Donahue Institute has grown to become a leading voice and provider of public service, research and economic development in the Commonwealth and beyond.
The celebration both reflected the institute’s first half-century of services and looked ahead at the institute's next chapter. The event also recognized former Boston City Councilor Andrea Joy Campbell with the inaugural UMass Donahue Institute Public Service Award.
The master of ceremonies for the event was UMass Donahue Institute Executive Director Johan E. Uvin, who joined the institute as its director in 2021. Uvin previously served on the Obama education team under both Secretaries of Education Arne Duncan and John King, Jr. While at the Department of Education, he served as deputy assistant secretary in the first term and assistant secretary in the second term of President Obama’s administration.
