The UMass Amherst Symphony Orchestra, directed by Morihiko Nakahara, will perform Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2: “The Age of Anxiety” with faculty pianist Gilles Vonsattel as soloist on Thursday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall.

Originally commissioned by longtime Boston Symphony Orchestra music director Serge Koussevitsky, “The Age of Anxiety” was one of Bernstein’s earliest triumphs as a classical composer. This performance honors the composer’s 100th birthday. Later in March, Vonsattel will perform the piece with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

The March 8 program will also include Beethoven’s epic Symphony No. 7, and “Holy Roller” by Missy Mazzoli, whom The New York Times recently described as “one of the more consistently inventive and surprising composers now working in New York.”

Ticket prices are $10 for the general public, $5 for students, seniors and UMass Amherst employees, and free for UMass Amherst students. Tickets may be purchased at the Fine Arts Center Box Office, by phone at 413/545-2511, or online at www.fineartscenter.com/musicanddance.
