UMass Amherst Senior to Study Ways to Improve Use of PVTA Bus System To Better Serve Needs of BayState Medical Employees in Springfield

AMHERST, Mass. – The Commonwealth Honors College thesis of a UMass Amherst senior will focus on how to improve transit services to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, and he needs public participation to make it a success.

Henry Mulvey has designed an online survey and is asking members of the public to take part. This project is a study to assess PVTA bus service to Springfield's Medical District and, specifically, BayState Medical Center. PVTA routes P21, P21E, G1 and B4 are a major part of this study. By completing the survey participants will help the study and support the goal of improving the utilization of the PVTA bus system for people going to and from BayState Medical Center.

Mulvey notes that BayState Medical Center has employment bases that are heavily reliant on public transit.

“The main question of the study is how can the public transit system better serve these employees, and specifically, what do the employees of BayState Medical Center want for the region’s transit system,” Mulvey said. “A major outcome of the study will be the production of a Transit Needs Study that will assess current conditions and propose recommendations to improve the commutes on public transportation for these employees.”
