Jedaidah Chilufya, who is pursuing her Ph.D. in sustainable agriculture at UMass Amherst, has received a 2020-21 International Fellowship from the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

Fellowship and grant recipients will pursue academic work and lead innovative community projects to empower women and girls.

AAUW is one of the world’s oldest leading supporters of graduate women’s education. Since 1888, it has awarded more than $115 million in fellowships, grants and awards to 13,000 recipients from more than 105 countries. For the 2020–21 academic year, AAUW awarded a total of $3.5 million through seven fellowships and grants programs to more than 200 scholars and community projects and programs promoting education and equity for women and girls.

AAUW’s website describes Chilufya’s research:

“The farming practices in Zambia inspired Jedaidah Chilufya’s research interest in sustainable agriculture using legume farming to contribute to eradicating hunger. Her goal is to boost the production of legumes grown by local farmers in Massachusetts and to later replicate these studies back home in Zambia. She cofounded Juniors and Seniors Mentoring Network Zambia, where young girls and boys in secondary schools and colleges are exposed to STEM and are guided by a network of mentors.”

Applications are currently being accepted for 2021-22 grants and fellowships. Deadlines vary by program. To find out more about this year’s exceptional class of awardees, visit the online directory.
