UMass Amherst Ranked 126th among Global Research Universities

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Amherst is 126th among research universities worldwide in 2018 Best Global Universities published by U.S. News & World Report.

The rankings also include 22 broad subject areas, where the university is 5th worldwide in agricultural sciences.

The fourth annual Best Global Universities ranking was expanded to the top 1,250 institutions in 74 nations. Universities are ranked based on 13 indicators that measure overall academic research performance and global and regional reputations, not on separate undergraduate or graduate programs.

In subject rankings for 2018, UMass Amherst was 5th in agricultural science; 62nd in arts and humanities; 66th in space science and 97th in chemistry. There are 22 subject rankings, but universities are not necessarily ranked in all.

Subject areas are considered broadly in the rankings. For example, arts and humanities includes archaeology, language and linguistics, and performing arts. Agricultural sciences include horticulture, food science and nutrition, dairy science and agronomy. Environment and ecology includes subjects such as environmental health, environmental monitoring and management and climate change. Space science includes astronomy and astrophysics, celestial bodies and other subjects related to the study of the universe.

Other 2018 subject rankings for UMass Amherst were: 104th in environment and ecology; 111th in materials science; 117th in physics; 135th in social sciences and public health; 158th in plant and animal science; 167th in computer science; 183rd in economics and business; 203rd in biology and biochemistry, and 384th in engineering.
