UMass Amherst Purchases 15 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Through State Grant

UMass Amherst has purchased 15 ChargePoint electric vehicle charging stations through a $175,000 grant it received this summer from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources.

The dual port, pedestal mount CPF50 charging stations were procured through the Leading by Example Clean Energy Grant-Fleet EVSE Deployment program, which supports eligible state entities in the purchase of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) at state facilities in preparation for the anticipated transition of the state fleet to electric vehicles. “This program aims to support the cost-effective installation and upkeep of EVSE infrastructure across a diverse range of state facilities,” the grant website states.

The new charging stations will be installed in the Physical Plant Lot 41 parking lot along Commonwealth Avenue, where vehicles for UMass Amherst Facilities and Campus Services (F&CS), including custodial services and utilities, are housed.

F&CS departments can now consider procuring new electric vehicles, since EV chargers will be available to charge them when parked. Since each station has two ports, this will allow for 30 new parking spots to be dedicated to fleet electric vehicle parking and charging behind the gate at Lot 41.

Installation of the charging stations is planned to be completed by spring 2024.
