UMass Amherst Presents Art Sustainability Activism: ‘Archives of the Future’

The University of Massachusetts Amherst announces Art Sustainability Activism: “Archives of the Future,” an interdisciplinary series devoted to illuminating ecological crises through the lens of science and art. “Archives of the Future” marks the fourth annual collaboration between the Fine Arts Center, MFA for Poets and Writers and School of Earth and Sustainability and will include readings, panels, discussions and community engagement.

The fall schedule features:

Codemakers: Pangea World Theater and Double Edge Theatre

Leading contemporary theater ensembles, Pangea World Theater from Minneapolis, Minnesota and Double Edge Theatre from Ashfield, Massachusetts, discuss their bold creative work and groundbreaking initiatives in community engagement, social justice, and sustainability.

Abigail Chabitnoy Reading – Visiting Writers Series

Sept. 29, 6 p.m. | Old Chapel | Free with registration

Poet Abigail Chabitnoy’s stunning new work, “In the Current Where Drowning Is Beautiful,” is a meditation on water, land, women, and violent environmental changes as they affect the natural world and human migration. Chabitnoy is a Koniag descendant and member of the Tangirnaq Native Village in Kodiak, Alaska. This reading is produced in conjunction with the MFA’s Visiting Writers Series, presenting emerging and established writers since 1964.

Acclaimed Native American playwright and MacArthur Fellow Larissa Fasthorse, and Michael John Garcés, artistic director of Cornerstone Theater Company, bring their uniquely creative community engagement process to campus. The events in this series articulate a desire to trace the connections between science, culture, activism and the arts. They traverse the territory between art and citizenship. The series will also investigate the possibilities of action on the UMass campus and beyond.
