UMass Amherst Economist Léonce Ndikumana to Examine Effects of Capital Flight from Africa in Distinguished Faculty Lecture
AMHERST, Mass. – Léonce Ndikumana, professor of economics, will present a Distinguished Faculty Lecture titled “Capital Flight from Africa: Is the World Genuinely Ready for Action?” on Monday, April 9 at 4 p.m. in the Great Hall of Old Chapel at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Domestic and global structural factors have caused a sustained outflow of capital from Africa, a continent that faces deep development financing constraints. Ndikumana’s lecture will explain how capital flight is part of a pattern of integration of Africa into the global economy that has entrenched the continent’s exploitation and marginalization. It will also show how structural flaws in the global economic system and its governance make it difficult to combat capital flight and illicit financial flows from Africa and propose new ways to address these problems.
Ndikumana will be presented with the Chancellor’s Medal, the highest recognition bestowed to faculty by the campus, at the conclusion of the lecture.
The event is free and open to the public and a reception follows the lecture. For information, call 413-577-1101.
The lecture series is sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor and the Office of the Provost.
