WHAT: Food Science Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The Department of Food Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the first established in the U.S., will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a weekend of alumni activities that include a reception and dinner on Friday, Sept. 28 in the Student Union Ballroom and tours of Chenoweth Laboratory and food-related activities Saturday, Sept. 29.
At the dinner, campus officials will address the gathering, including Kumble R. Subbaswamy, UMass Amherst chancellor; John J. McCarthy, provost and senior vice chancellor for academic affairs; Tricia R. Serio, dean of the College of Natural Sciences, and Professor Eric Decker, the current department head. There are also planned video presentations offering congratulations from U.S. Rep. James McGovern and U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
On Saturday, Sept. 29, there will be tours of Chenoweth Laboratory and the Pilot Plant Laboratory from 9 to 10:30 a.m. From 10:30 a.m. to noon, there will be food related activities about canning in the Pilot Plant; the history of chocolate and tasting, Old Chapel, second floor, and a scavenger hunt beginning from Chenoweth Laboratory.
