Black Women United (BWU), an initiative supported by UMass ADVANCE’s Mutual Mentoring Grant Award program, will host its final Sister:Resisters workshop of the spring semester titled, “What to Do and What to Avoid When Mentoring Black Women Effectively,” on Friday, April 19 from 2-4 p.m. at the Lederle Graduate Research Center, Room A112.

Facilitated by Janie Victoria Ward and Tracy L. Robinson-Wood, the in-person workshop-style session will examine the evidence collected through multiple sources, including qualitative and quantitative research, podcasts and stories featured in radio and print news that highlight what has worked well – and not worked well – in mentoring Black women students and faculty.

Further application of essential tools to address identified challenges and vulnerabilities associated with effective mentoring for Black women will also be illuminated and practiced with case study vignettes. A primary goal of the workshop will be for attendees to have greater confidence and competence in applying those tools that support the successful mentoring of Black women.

BWU is part of ADVANCE’s Mutual Mentoring Grant Award program and is an initiative that seeks to build, support and maintain a peer network and increase the advancement of Black women on the UMass Amherst campus. To grow and carry forward the program’s work, BWU looks to drive institutional transformation to create environments where diversity is encouraged and supported.
