Earlier this year, Subbaswamy completed more than a decade at UMass Amherst as chancellor, during which the campus enhanced its national stature, increased enrollment, modernized facilities and boosted the real-world impact of its research enterprise.

Currently, Subbaswamy serves as interim senior vice president for academic and student affairs and equity for the entire university, serving the five-campus, 74,000-student UMass system.

In late September, Subbaswamy received a 2023 Governor’s Award from Mass Humanities. He was honored for his commitment to education and transformative work at UMass Amherst, where he built a campus culture centered on social responsibility and inclusiveness, essential elements in the humanities.
