Tour and Discussion of Brutalist Architecture on Campus Scheduled for Oct. 20
The UMass Amherst Historic Preservation Program and the New England chapter of Docomomo US will host a tour of the "brutalist" post-war modern architectural designs of Kevin Roche, Marcel Breuer and others on campus, Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served after the two-hour tour, followed by an hour-long discussion and a presentation of the film “Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect.” All events, including the start of the tour, will occur at the John W. Olver Design Building on North Pleasant Street.
Speakers will include Timothy Rohan and Margaret Vickery, history of art and architecture, Carl Fiocchi, environmental conservation, and Docomomo US New England chapter co-president David Fixler.
All event activities are free to students, UMass Amherst faculty and staff. Members of the Docomomo US New England chapter may register at the door.
Tickets for the tour and discussion portions of the event will be available to the general public for $25. The film will be free and open to the public, with no registration required.
Up to 3.5 American Institute of Architects (AIA) continuing education learning units (LUs) can also be claimed by participating in these events.
