Communication doctoral student Erica Tortolani and communication professor Marty Norden have just published their co-edited anthology “ReFocus: The Films of Paul Leni” with the University of Edinburgh Press (EUP).

“ReFocus” examines the artistic output of Paul Leni (1885-1929), a German filmmaker who labored in obscurity for years as a graphic artist, set designer, costume designer, and film director before soaring to fame with “Waxworks” in 1924 and “The Cat and the Canary” three years later. The first book in English on this multi-talented but underappreciated visual artist, “ReFocus: The Films of Paul Leni” features the work of a dozen international film scholars, including associate professor of communication Shawn Shimpach and Joel Westerdale, associate professor of German studies at Smith College.

More information about the book is available on the EUP website at https://edinburghuniversitypress.com/book-refocus-the-films-of-paul-leni.html.
