Christopher Uggen is Regents Professor, Martindale Chair, and Distinguished McKnight Professor in Sociology, Law and Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. He studies crime, law and inequality from a life course perspective, firm in the belief that sound research can help build a more just and peaceful world. His current research projects include studies of felon disenfranchisement, reentry, the consequences of harassment and discrimination, crime and justice after genocide, monetary sanctions, and the health effects of incarceration. His lecture will focus on voting restrictions for people with criminal records – an area of dramatic legal and policy change in recent years. After addressing the origins, scope, political impact and public opinion on the practice, it considers the evolving meaning of these legal restrictions in the United States and other nations.

The event will be hosted in South College, Room E241 and is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and registration is preferred. The lecture will also be presented via Zoom with the link and more information will be shared upon registration.
