Symposium in Honor of Alex Deschamps Marks Launch of New Scholarship
“Critical Pedagogies of Race and Gender,” a symposium honoring Alex Deschamps, will take place on Friday, March 19 from 1 to 5:30 p.m.
Topics include “Black Feminism Reimagined,” “Queering Home: Silences, Contradictions and Unexpected Intimacies” and a celebration of the legacy of Alex Deschamps.
Registration is required for participation. This symposium also marks the launch of the Alex Deschamps Student Award, which provides support for current UMass Amherst students doing work preferably but not exclusively on black feminisms or women of color feminisms. The work could be related to current or planned coursework, internships, jobs or activist projects.
Deschamps joined the faculty of women, gender and sexuality studies in 1995, before moving to the Commonwealth Honors College as a full-time associate dean in the fall of 2018. Her areas of research include third world and global women's issues, development alternatives, feminist pedagogies, Black feminist theory and transnational feminist activisms.
