Steve Bobbitt Named Director of Campus Recreation
The Office of Student Affairs has announced that Steve Bobbitt, associate director of programming for campus recreation at James Madison University (JMU), has accepted the position of director of campus recreation. Bobbitt brings a depth and breadth of recreation experience that will lead campus recreation, and the Wellbeing and Campus Life Collaborative, to an exciting future creating a joyful wellbeing experience for our community.
Beyond his longstanding leadership at JMU, Bobbitt comes to UMass having previously held leadership positions in outdoor learning and adventure programming. His skill and expertise are recognized at the national level, with Bobbitt serving in many capacities within NIRSA: Leaders in Campus Recreation and as faculty for the National School of Recreation Sport Management. In his work as a consultant to campus recreation programs across the country, Bobbitt focuses on learning outcomes, program design, team-building, and adventure programs, all within the frame of fostering successful connection with the current generation of students.
As adjunct faculty in the Hart School of Hospitality, Sport, and Recreation Management, Bobbitt has taught courses on group and team development theory, leadership and facility management. His knowledge and skill shared in the classroom are evident in his work; he has been highly involved in several master planning and renovation projects as JMU, including the University Recreation UPARK Master Plan.
Bobbitt and his wife Deena, a public school teacher, will relocate to the Amherst area in late spring. An avid outdoorsperson, Bobbitt enjoys mountain biking, road biking, skiing, paddling, hiking, and travel.
