College of Nursing Dean Stephen J. Cavanagh has been appointed dean of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis in Sacramento, California.

Cavanagh, who has served as dean of the College of Nursing since 2011, will begin at UC Davis July 22.

In his tenure at UMass, Cavanagh developed strong partnerships with the Institute for Applied Life Science (IALS) and the College of Engineering, which has led to joint hires, new facilities and increased collaboration with other colleges on campus.

Under Cavanagh’s leadership, the accelerated bachelor of science in nursing program was moved to the UMass Center at Springfield in fall 2017. In spring of 2018, Spacelabs Healthcare made a $720,000 investment the simulation lab there.

Cavanagh has been a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellow, a Johnson & Johnson/UCLA Health Management Fellow and a Penn-Macy Fellow. He was recently elected to the nominating committee for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). In 2016 he was named one of the 30 most influential deans of nursing in the United States by Mometrix, a Texas-based test preparation company.

A search committee is being formed to seek Cavanagh’s replacement.
