The School of Public Policy (SPP) and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts’ Arts Extension Service are offering a new concentration in nonprofit and arts management for students in SPP’s Master of Public Policy and Master of Public Policy and Administration programs.

“Many of our students go on to careers in the nonprofit sector,” said Alasdair Roberts, SPP director. “This concentration will allow them to delve deeply into topics such as cultural policy and management, leaving them well prepared for their work.”

“Policy is the result of advocacy, and advocacy stems from understanding and working to address community needs,” said Dee Boyle-Clapp, director of the Arts Extension Service. “This concentration will introduce students to the essentials of how to articulate these needs and work to create change in the arts and other nonprofit fields.”

Students in the concentration will take a minimum of three nonprofit-focused classes, choosing from a mix of online and on-campus offerings. Course topics include nonprofit law and management, social and environmental enterprises, strategic fundraising and philanthropy, arts management, cultural policy and advocacy, cultural equity in the arts, and the creative economy and place making.

The nonprofit and arts management concentration is one of a number of specialties available to SPP students. They can also specialize in areas including social policy, sustainability and environmental policy, feminist studies, and Latin American studies.
