SPHHS Announces Spring 2021 Dean’s Seminar Series

The School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS) has announced its Dean’s Seminar lineup for the Spring 2021 semester.

The series will kick off with public health practice alumna Louise Valentine ‘17MPH delivering “The Art of Breaking Through: Five Simple Steps to Take on Any Challenge and Tackle Self-Doubt”  on Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 5 to 6 p.m. In her talk, Valentine will share insights from her career experience and best-selling book of the same name.

“Louise will discuss strategies on how to deal with life’s challenges and help all of us to understand that we can overcome the isolation, personal and professional struggles that have been brought on by this pandemic,” says dean Anna Maria Siega-Riz. “It will be an engaging session that will provide a plan for how to tackle these struggles over the semester.”

Future seminars in the series will highlight ongoing research being conducted by current SPHHS faculty. Among those scheduled to deliver seminars are associate professor of communication disorders Mary Andrianopoulos (Feb. 23); Distinguished Professor of Epidemiology and associate dean of research Susan Hankinson (March 11); assistant professor of communication disorders Sara Mamo (March 23); and associate professor of environmental health sciences and associate dean of undergraduate academic affairs Laura Vandenberg (April 8).

“These seminars will provide our students with a unique opportunity to hear from and interact with our talented faculty concerning their research,” says Siega-Riz. “We know that this is something that has been missing during this pandemic. When possible, we will host these seminars in a hybrid in-person and virtual format that will allow up to 40 students to attend the seminar in person – following all COVID safety procedures – and to take home a Grab-n-Go meal. This is all in an effort to keep some of the high-quality touches that make UMass such an excellent place to learn and live.”
