Sociologist Juliet Schor to Deliver Fifth Annual Samuel Bowles Lecture Nov. 20 at UMass Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – Juliet Schor, professor of sociology at Boston College, will deliver the fifth annual Samuel Bowles lecture presented by University of Massachusetts department of economics, in the Gordon Hall Conference Room on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 4-6 p.m. The lecture, “It’s Beyond the Gig: Work and the Platform Economy,” is free and open to the public, with a reception to follow in the Gordon Hall Atrium.

A member of the MacArthur Foundation Connected Learning Research Network, Schor’s research focuses on consumption, time use and environmental sustainability. A graduate of Wesleyan University, she received her Ph.D. in economics at UMass Amherst.

Before joining Boston College, Schor taught at Harvard University for 17 years in the department of economics and the committee on degrees in women’s studies. In 2014, she received the American Sociological Association’s award for Public Understanding of Sociology. She is currently researching the “connected economy,” as well as the relationship between working hours, inequality and carbon emissions.

The purpose of the Samuel Bowles Lecture is to highlight work conducted in the spirit of the UMass Amherst economics department. The lecture is named for Samuel Bowles, professor emeritus of economics, and is supported by the economics department and an anonymous donation.
