School of Public Policy Hosts U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, State Sen. Jo Comerford and State Rep. Mindy Domb to Kick Off Academic Year

The School of Public Policy will kick off the 2023-24 academic year with a keynote address by U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern on Friday, Sept. 8 in Old Chapel. State Sen. Jo Comerford and state Rep. Mindy Domb will also offer remarks at the kickoff event, with a focus on inspiring students to be agents of change. All three lawmakers will field questions from students, faculty and staff.

Light refreshments will be served at 11:45 a.m., with the speaking program running from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel’s Great Room.

Representing Massachusetts’ 2nd Congressional District, Rep. McGovern was first elected to Congress in 1996. He is the ranking member of the House Rules Committee, as well as a senior member of the House Committee on Agriculture’s Subcommittee on Nutrition and Oversight, the Democratic co-chair of the bipartisan Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, and member of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China.

Sen. Comerford was elected to the Massachusetts Senate to represent the Hampshire, Franklin and Worcester district in 2018. Currently in her third term, she chairs the Joint Committee on Higher Education, is acting chair of the Joint Committee on Agriculture and is assistant vice chair of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means.  

Rep. Domb was first elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 2018 and is also in her third term on Beacon Hill. Serving Amherst and portions of Granby, Domb chairs the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts and Cultural Development.

The speaking program will also include welcoming remarks from R. Karl Rethemeyer, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Jane Fountain, director of the School of Public Policy.
