AMHERST, Mass - The former University of Massachusetts Amherst campus horse barn on Grinnell Way, now part of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture’s Agricultural Learning Center, will be officially unveiled to the public with a ribbon cutting and opening celebration.
Built in 1894 and unused for years, the horse barn has been rebuilt and relocated, thanks to a generous donation from Dr. Richard Bonanno and the Massachusetts Farm Bureau Federation.
In its new life, the barn supports student agricultural activities and houses industry-standard equipment for washing and packing the approximately 75,000 pounds of vegetables produced by student farmers each year.
The North Pleasant Street location is part of university property at the former Wysocki Farm. Last used by the UMass Amherst Police Department for its mounted patrol more than a decade ago, the iconic Queen Anne style structure was the last barn on the main campus.
