The Resistance Studies Initiative (RSI) Speaker Series will host Z. Fareen Parvez on Wednesday, April 28, at noon for a webinar talk, “International Debt Resistance.”

Z. Fareen Parvez is an associate professor of sociology and senior research scholar with the UMass Resistance Studies Initiative at UMass Amherst and a 2019-20 member of the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton.

She is the author of “Politicizing Islam: the Islamic Revival in France and India” and is currently researching the political economy of debt in marginalized Muslim and Dalit communities in India.

The event’s abstract is as follows:

Debt resistance has a long and ancient history but has recently risen to the forefront of contemporary resistance movements in many places across the world. This talk will give an overview of different modes of challenging debt and its ideologies, focusing on the issue of household debt and highlighting research conducted among marginalized communities in India.
