Resistance Studies Hosts 'Community & Movement Building for Justice' Symposium in Springfield
The Resistance Studies Initiative will present “Community & Movement Building for Justice with Juan Haro,” Saturday, Oct. 13, from noon-6 p.m. at South Congregational Church, 45 Maple St., Springfield. The free organizing symposium is presented in coordination with Movement for Justice in El Barrio, an immigrant, women and people of color-led grassroots community organization that fights for dignity and against displacement in East Harlem, New York.
The symposium will include a range of workshops in which participants will engage in hands on trainings in community organizing skills while also confronting multiple forms of oppression – patriarchy, racism, sexism, transphobia, xenophobia and homophobia among them.
Workshops led by Movement for Justice in El Barrio's Haro will include the following topics:
- Base-building for social justice organizing
- Getting communities involved in the fight
- The seven organizing principles of the indigenous Zapatistas in Chiapas, Mexico
- Confronting multiple forms of oppression, including racism, patriarchy, homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia
Registration is required for the symposium, with a deadline of Oct. 9. All are welcome, and snacks and lunch will be provided. Childcare will also be provided if requested at registration.
Co-organizers of the symposium also include Arise for Social Justice, Pioneer Valley Workers Center and Pioneer Valley Project.
