The Resistance Studies Initiative Fall Speaker Series to Begin

The Resistance Studies Initiative’s fall speaker series, featuring three events, will begin with a talk by Sean Chabot, professor of sociology at Eastern Washington University, on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m.

The talk, “Nonviolent Resistance Beyond the Single Story,” will focus on the danger of what novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie calls a "single story." Single stories normalize dominant ways of knowing, while limiting the imagination and possibilities of people in marginalized communities.

Chabot is the book review editor of the “Journal of Resistance Studies” and author of “Transnational Roots of the Civil Rights Movement,” which discusses the Gandhian repertoire's transnational journey from the Indian independence movement to the Black liberation movement in the United States. His current projects focus on decolonizing resistance and counter-stories of nonviolent resistance beyond the strategic paradigm.

As the series continues, Ynestra King, research associate at the Five College Women’s Studies Research Center, and Joanne Sheehan, resistance studies fellow at the Resistance Studies Initiative, will present “Inhabiting the In Between: Barbara Deming’s Radical Feminist Nonviolence” on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Wednesday, Dec. 4, Mandy Carter, resistance studies fellow at the Resistance Studies Initiative, will give the talk “Possible Models of How to Build Intersectional Resistance Alliances.”

All three free, public events will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in room 145 of the Integrated Science Building (ISB). Refreshments will be served.
