Professor Emerita Sonia Nieto Receives Governor’s Award in the Humanities

Professor emerita Sonia Nieto, education, received the Governor’s Award in the Humanities on Oct. 24 at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library and Museum in Boston.

This award recognizes Nieto for her lifetime dedication to public, bilingual, and multicultural education reform, as well as her social justice scholarship.

Nieto’s research on multicultural education, Latin@ education, and teacher education has been published in thirteen books and dozens of journal articles and book chapters. Nieto has received numerous awards for her scholarly work, teaching, advocacy and activism, including nine honorary doctorates. The first edition of her classic text, “Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education,” was featured for the Museum of Education Readers’ Guide as “one of the 100 books that helped define the field of education in the 20th century.”
