The Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at UMass Amherst invites the campus community to join Léonce Ndikumana and James Boyce as they discuss their new book, “On the Trail of Capital Flight from Africa: The Takers and the Enablers,” in-person or virtually via Zoom, on Friday, March 25. The event, which will be held in the third-floor conference room of Gordon Hall from 3-4:30 p.m., is free and open to the public.

On the Trail of Capital Flight from Africa” investigates the dynamics of capital flight from Angola, Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa, countries that have witnessed large-scale illicit financial outflows in recent decades. The evidence reveals a complex network of actors and enablers involved in the accumulation of private wealth in offshore secrecy jurisdictions, which Ndikumana and Boyce, the book’s co-editors, say underscores the reality that capital flight is a global phenomenon. Measures to curtail it, they say, are a shared responsibility for Africa and the global community.

Ndikumana is a Distinguished Professor of Economics and director of the African Development Policy Program within PERI, and Boyce is professor emeritus of economics at UMass Amherst and a senior fellow with PERI. They will be joined in the presentation by Melvin Ayogu, professor of economics at Emory University and a contributor to the book.

A discussion with Jayati Ghosh, UMass Amherst professor of economics, and Patrick Bond, professor of sociology at the University of Johannesburg, will follow the presentation, as will a question and answer session.
