Jane E. Carroll, 83, of Turners Falls, a former clerk in several university departments, died Aug. 3.

Born Oct. 26, 1934 in Greenfield, she graduated from Greenfield High School in 1952.

She joined UMass Amherst is 1985 and served as a clerk in the music department, WFCR, plant and soil science and Extension, retiring in 2002.

She was a volunteer at Farren Memorial Hospital, a volunteer poll worker for the Town of Montague and a long-time Montague Town Meeting member. She was also an accomplished singer, singing with the Pioneer Valley Symphony.

She studied music and poetry at UMass Amherst and Greenfield Community College.

She was the widow of John Patrick Carroll Jr. (Pat), who ran the family’s Carroll Supermarkets of Gill, Millers Falls and Orange.

She is survived by daughters Nancy Carroll (Kevin Ryan) of Montreal, Canada, and Diane Carroll of New York City; sons Brian (fiancé Terry Warner) of Hadley, Jeffrey of Greenfield and John (Christine Oshcner) of Boston; daughter-in-law Jeanette Voas of Greenfield; sister Ann Bukowski of Greenfield; and brother-in-law Edward Symanski.
