Obituary: Anne Tessier, Retired Clerical Worker in Several Departments

Anne R. Tessier, 92, of Florence, who earned associate and bachelor’s degrees in her 60s and was employed as a clerical worker in several departments, died March 17.

Born in Holyoke, she graduated from St. Michael’s High School in 1942. She worked at local insurance agencies and in the mathematics department early in her career.

While raising her three children, she earned money typing theses for many students. She returned to college at age 60, earning her associate degree in business administration at Holyoke Community College. She then earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from UMass Amherst with a certificate from the Golden Key National Honor Society. While a student in 1992 she worked in the women’s studies department.

Upon graduation, she worked in Latin American studies, the dean’s office in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the economics department. After retiring from the university in 2003 at age 77, she taught English as a second language as a volunteer in Northampton.

She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Raymond L. Tessier, in 2016. She is survived by sons Gerald and his wife Sandra of South Carolina and Andrew of Los Angeles, California, and a daughter Mary (Tessier) LeMoine and her husband Alan of Easthampton.

The funeral will be Friday, March 23 at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at Annunciation Chapel, 82 Beacon St., Florence.

Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, March 22 from 5-7 p.m. at Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton.
