Norden Publishes Book on Early Woman Filmmaker

Martin Norden, professor of communication, has just published an anthology on Lois Weber, one of the film world's first great screenwriter-directors. Weber made hundreds of movies in the U.S. during the 1910s and ’20s, before Norden contends institutionalized sexism ended her career. 

Norden's book, “Lois Weber: Interviews,” restores her voice by reproducing more than 60 primary documents, including interviews with Weber, newspaper articles that she wrote and the text of a speech she gave. The vast majority of those items, all from the1910s-30s, have never been reprinted until now.

The book also includes the most thorough filmography of Weber's work to date and a detailed chronology of her life and career.

“Lois Weber: Interviews” was published by the University Press of Mississippi as an installment in its "Conversations with Filmmakers" series.
