Nagurney Co-Edits New Book on Dynamics of Disasters

Anna Nagurney, the John F. Smith Memorial Professor of Operations Management at the Isenberg School of Managment, has co-edited “Dynamics of Disasters: Algorithmic Approaches and Applications.”

Published by Springer International Publishing in Switzerland, the new book is a collection of refereed chapters based on papers presented at the 3rd International Conference on Dynamics of Disasters held in Kalamata, Greece, in 2017, which Nagurney co-organized with co-editors Ilias S. Kotsireas of Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada and Panos M. Pardalos of the University of Florida.

Topics covered in the book include: evacuation networks, cash transfer programs for disaster victims, freight service provision for disaster relief, enhanced disaster communications, coordination among humanitarian relief organizations, and center accommodations for refugees.

Methodological approaches utilized in the analyses range from network and optimization theory to game theory with case studies on Ebola in western Africa and tornadoes that hit western Massachusetts in 2011, among others.

Included in the volume is the paper, “A Variational Equilibrium Network Framework for Humanitarian Organizations in Disaster Relief: Effective Product Delivery Under Competition for Financial Funds,” that Nagurney co-authored with Emilio Alvarez Flores and Italian colleagues. Flores is an Isenberg and Commonwealth Honors College 2016 alumnus.
