Francis X. “Frank” Mangan, extension professor emeritus of vegetable crop horticulture and marketing in the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, died Aug. 12.

A “lifer” at Stockbridge and UMass, Mangan first came to campus as a student of agriculture, subsequently earning his bachelor’s degree in 1986, his master’s degree in weed science in 1991 and his doctorate in 1998.

He then served as extension professor in Stockbridge, specializing in ethnic crops, urban agriculture and vegetable production and marketing. As director of the Agricultural Learning Center, managed by the Stockbridge School, he helped develop the UMass Student Farm, which now sells fresh-grown produce to UMass Dining.

Before retiring in 2020, Mangan was recognized by the university as full professor emeritus.

The Stockbridge School recently published a remembrance of Mangan on their website, and his formal obituary is available online from the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

A celebration of life for Mangan will be held on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 3 p.m. in the Marriott Center on the 11th floor of the Campus Center.
