Mazzei Shortlisted for Portuguese Translation of Fernando Arenas’s ‘Lusophone Africa’
Cristiano Mazzei, lecturer and director of translator and interpreter training in the department of languages, literatures and cultures, has been shortlisted for an award from the Brazilian Association of University Presses (ABEU) in the translation category for his Portuguese translation of “Lusophone Africa: Beyond Independence” by the late scholar Fernando Arenas.
“Lusophone Africa” is a study of the contemporary cultural production of Portuguese-speaking Africa and its critical engagement with globalization in the aftermath of colonialism, especially since the advent of multiparty politics and market-oriented economies. Arenas puts forth a conceptual framework for understanding, for the first time, recent cultural and historical developments in Portuguese-speaking Africa. In light of Mazzei’s translation, audiences in the Portuguese speaking world will now have access to the Arenas’s important work.
