Martina Nieswandt Named Vice President for Research at Chapman University
Martina Nieswandt, associate vice chancellor for research and engagement, has been named the new vice president for research at Chapman University in Orange, California. Prior to taking on her current role at UMass Amherst in 2017, she served as an Associate Dean for Research and Engagement and is a professor of science education in the College of Education. Prior to joining UMass Amherst in 2011, she was an associate professor of science education at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. She has also previously held faculty positions in education at the University of Toronto and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
In her new role, she will develop and lead research strategic planning, working closely with the Chapman leadership; oversee the university’s research support areas; and collaborate with federal and state offices, granting agencies, foundations, business and industry to identify research opportunities and funding.
“I am very grateful for Martina’s many excellent contributions to Research and Engagement team for the past five years overseeing the Offices of Pre-Award Services, Project Management and Training, and Communications,” said Mike Malone, vice chancellor for research and engagement.
Nieswandt worked extensively on the administration of centers and institutes for the campus; supported and expanded international research strategy and collaborations; reviewed and revised administrative processes to be equitable, service-oriented, and efficient; and led activities to improve climate and well-being of research and engagement staff.
