March 9 Media Update 5 p.m. from Town of Amherst, UMass Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. — Town of Amherst and University of Massachusetts Amherst officials report that a large-scale gathering that occurred in town on Saturday concluded around 2:30 p.m.

Amherst Police, Amherst Fire, UMass Police and the Massachusetts State Police, along with Amherst CRESS responders and other public safety partners, were present in Amherst neighborhoods. Crowds principally gathered at the Townehouse condominiums on Meadow Street. 

Police officials reported 18 arrests and 50 citations and summonses during Saturday. The majority were alcohol-related, either for underage possession or open container violations. Other charges included disorderly conduct and two cases of assault and battery on a police officer. Police said property damage was minimal.

The Amherst Fire Department reported 21 medical transports by ambulance, mostly related to alcohol consumption.

Town of Amherst and UMass Amherst officials praised public safety staff for their effective and timely responses during a challenging day. They said collaborative planning efforts, including proactive police intervention to confiscate alcohol from underage individuals, helped manage the impact of today’s gatherings.
